Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi was born on the 2nd of October 1869. He has led nationwide campaigns to ease poverty and to expand women's rights. He organised many protests and generally, supported peace. Although the final assassination wasn't until January 30, 1948, there were five other unsuccessful attempts to kill him.

The first attempt was during a time when Gandhi and his wife were in Pune. There were two cars travelling to his destiation and both him and his wife were in the second car. When the first car arrived, a bomb was thrown and narrowly missed the second vehicle.

The second attempt was mainly a demonstration of anger. A group of 15-20 young men held a day long protest, but yet when they were invited to talk with Gandhi, they declined. Later in the evening, Nathuram Godse' came towards Gandhi with a dagger.

The third attempt was once again led by Nathuram Godse. There was a protest held because the people didn't want Gandhi to go to Mumbai and talk with 'Jinnah'.
Nathuram Godse, was again found in possession of a dagger. The policeman who found the dagger then looked up to him and joked, "Why do you want to kill Gandhi? Let's leave it to the leaders themselves... perhaps (Veer) Savarkar will finish off the job!" At which Godse retorted, "Gandhi does not require such an honour. Even the jamadar (sweeper) is enough for that!"

The forth attempt was when the 'Gandhi Special' train was between Neral and Karjet and it encountered several boulders. The Pune police claimed that the boulders were placed on the track to stop trains carrying goods. Because this was the only train on that route at that time, it is suggested that Gandhi must have been the target.

The fifth attempt was on the 20th of January, 1948. A group of seven men (Madanlal Pahwa, Shankar Kistaiya, Digambar Badge, Vishnu Karkare, Gopal Godse, Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte) went to 'Birla Bhavan'(AKA Birla House) in New Delhi. A bomb was meant to go off, causing panic, whilst one of the men would shoot Gandhi in the head. The plan went wrong when a cab driver became suspicious of why Madanlal Pahwa wanted to be taken towards the building from the back. After the previous failed attempt, Nathuram Godse and Narayan Apte purchased a Semi-automatic firearm and eleven rounds of ammunition. They reached New Delhi on the 29th of January, 1948. At 5:17pm on the next day, Nathuram Godse got close to Mohandas Gandhi and shot him three times in the chest. Some people say he was completely silent as he died, and others say he muttered the words, 'Hai ram' which means 'Oh God'.
